What To Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak at Home

Feeling worried when you smell gas or suspect a leak is completely normal. The most important thing is to stay calm and focus on a few simple safety steps. A careful approach helps protect you, your family, and your property while you arrange for professional help.

Common signs you might have a gas issue include:

  • Rotten egg or sulfur smell in or around the home
  • Hissing or whistling sounds near gas lines, meters, or appliances
  • Dead or dying grass or plants directly above a buried gas line
  • Unusual headaches, dizziness, or nausea when inside the house

Basic safety steps to take right away:

  • Move people and pets to fresh air. If the smell is strong, step outside and keep a safe distance from the building.
  • Avoid sparks and flames. Do not light matches, smoke, or use lighters. Try not to turn switches on or off if you believe gas is present.
  • Do not try DIY gas line work. Even simple seeming adjustments can be risky without proper training and tools.
  • Contact your gas utility if you believe there is a major leak. Utilities generally have their own safety procedures for shutting off service when needed.
  • Call our team for repair help. Once everyone is safe and any emergency utility steps are taken, you can call us to inspect and talk through the problem.

Here in Tulsa, we know that being without gas service can also affect heating, hot water, and cooking. Our weekday emergency availability and same-day service options are designed to help you move from that first moment of worry to a clear plan and professional repair as quickly as possible.

Our Gas Line Repair & Replacement Services

Gas lines run quietly in the background of your home, but when something goes wrong, you need a plumber who can handle a range of situations. Over the past 30 years, we have helped homeowners with everything from small leaks near a stove connection to more extensive replacement of aging lines.

We commonly help with situations such as:

  • Finding and repairing leaks. If you suspect a leak, we work to locate the source and repair damaged sections of piping where appropriate.
  • Replacing worn or damaged lines. Older or corroded pipes sometimes need more than a patch. We can replace sections or full runs of gas piping when needed.
  • Rerouting gas lines for remodels. When you move a stove, clothes dryer, or other gas appliance, the line often needs to be adjusted so it stays safe and code compliant.
  • Adding or adjusting appliance connections. We can help with gas connections for ranges, fireplaces, water heaters, and some outdoor features.

During gas line repair or replacement, we make a point to protect your home and yard as much as the situation allows. Some work might involve opening walls or digging outside, and when that happens, we discuss it with you beforehand so there are no surprises. Our plumbers focus on doing the job carefully, following applicable safety standards, and leaving your home as neat as possible once the work is complete.

How Our Tulsa Gas Line Repair Process Works

When you are already stressed about a gas issue, not knowing what will happen next can make things feel worse. Our process is designed to be clear and straightforward so you always know what to expect from our team.

It usually starts with a phone call:

  • When you call O'Connor Plumbing, we ask a few questions about what you are noticing, such as smells, sounds, or recent work on appliances.
  • From there, we can often provide a free estimate over the phone to give you a general idea of what may be involved.
  • If the situation sounds urgent, we talk through whether you should contact your gas utility before we come out.

When our plumbers arrive at your home, you can expect:

  • A clear introduction and review of your concerns. We listen to what you have noticed and walk through the areas of concern with you.
  • An inspection of the affected lines or appliances. We look for obvious signs of damage or leaks and may use tools that help us pinpoint issues more precisely.
  • An explanation of what we find. Before we start repair work, we explain what we see, what it likely means, and what your options are.
  • Upfront pricing. We review pricing with you so you understand the costs before we move forward. If the work changes as we go, we discuss that as well.

During the repair itself, our goal is to work efficiently while keeping safety at the center of every decision. Once the repair or replacement is complete, we check our work and make sure everything is operating as it should. We also review any applicable warranties with you and answer questions so you feel comfortable with the work that was performed on your gas system.

Pricing, Financing, & Warranties for Gas Line Work

Cost is one of the first questions most homeowners have about gas line problems. Because every home and every gas system is a little different, exact pricing depends on factors like pipe length, accessibility, and how much material needs to be replaced. That said, we never want you to feel in the dark about what a repair might cost.

We offer free estimates over the phone, which can help you get a basic idea of what you may be looking at before we come to your home. During that call, we ask a few questions about what you are seeing or smelling, where the gas lines run, and whether any previous work has been done. Once we can see the situation in person, we confirm pricing with you before any work begins.

Our pricing is built around fairness and clarity, not surprise fees. If a project grows in scope because of what we find inside walls or underground, we stop and talk to you about it first. For larger gas line repairs or replacements, financing options are available, which can make an unexpected project more manageable. The work we perform is backed by warranties, and we are happy to explain how that protection applies to your specific repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first if I smell gas at home?

If you smell gas, your first step should be to focus on safety. Move people and pets to fresh air, either by opening doors and windows if it feels safe or by stepping outside. Avoid open flames, smoking, or turning electrical switches on and off, since small sparks can be risky when gas is present. If the smell is strong or you hear a loud hissing noise, contacting your gas utility from a safe location is often the best next move, because they have specific procedures for shutting off service when needed. Once everyone is safe and any emergency response is underway, you can call our team so we can help identify the problem and talk through repair options.

Can your team come out the same day for a gas line issue?

In many cases, we can come out the same day for gas line concerns. Our schedule always depends on how many active calls we are handling and the time of day you contact us, but we work to prioritize situations that involve possible gas leaks or loss of gas service. We offer weekday 24 hour emergency support, which means you can reach us outside standard business hours during the week when something urgent comes up. On Saturdays and Sundays, we are available by appointment, so calling as soon as you notice an issue helps us find a time that works. When you call, we explain the timing that is realistic for your situation and location.

How much does gas line repair usually cost?

The cost of gas line repair can vary quite a bit, because it depends on where the line is located, how easy it is to reach, and how much piping needs attention. A small repair near an accessible appliance typically costs less than replacing a long underground run that requires digging. Since we know that guessing at costs can add to your stress, we provide free estimates over the phone to give you a starting point. When we arrive and see the exact situation in person, we review pricing with you before any work begins so you know what to expect. For larger projects, we can also discuss financing options that might help spread out the expense.

Do you warranty your gas line repair work?

Yes, the gas line repair work we perform is backed by warranties. The specific coverage can depend on the type of repair or replacement and the materials used, so we explain how the warranty applies to your job before we finish. Our goal is for you to feel confident that if something related to our work needs attention within the warranty period, you are not on your own. Warranties are one way we stand behind the clean, reliable work that we are known for. If you have questions about warranty details for a particular type of gas line project, we are always happy to talk through them.

Will gas line repair damage my yard or walls?

Some gas line repairs can involve opening walls, ceilings, or sections of your yard, depending on where the line runs and how accessible it is. When that is the case, we explain what is likely required before we start so you can plan around it. Our plumbers take care to keep work areas as contained as possible and to protect surfaces near the repair. We also clean up after ourselves when the job is done. While some projects may leave areas that need follow up patching or landscaping, we work to minimize disruption and keep you informed throughout the process.

Can you help if my gas was shut off after a leak was found?

Yes, we can often help in situations where your gas service has been shut off because a leak or issue was found. In those cases, the utility typically requires repairs to be completed and may need to verify that the system is safe before turning gas back on. Our role is to inspect your gas piping, identify what needs to be fixed, and perform the repair or replacement work that is required. We then communicate our findings to you so you understand what was done. While the utility’s procedures and timing are outside our control, our experience with local homes means we can usually help you move through the repair portion of the process more smoothly.

Do you work on gas lines for stoves, fireplaces, or outdoor grills?

We do work on many types of residential gas lines, including those that serve stoves, fireplaces, and some outdoor features like grills or fire pits. If you are adding a new appliance, moving an existing one, or having trouble with a gas connection, we can take a look and help plan a safe setup. The exact work involved depends on how your current gas system is laid out and what the new demand will be. When you call, we ask a few questions about the appliance and location, then discuss whether a simple adjustment or a more involved change is likely. Our goal is to help you enjoy your gas appliances with confidence that the piping behind them has been handled correctly.

FAQ

Find Answers To Your Questions
  • What can I put in my garbage disposal?
Garbage disposals are not macerators and will only break up soft debris. Mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, eggs etc. are ok to put in the disposal. Things like bones, coffee grounds, egg shells or any hard product will wear the blades and jam the disposal. You should always run water to the disposal to help break down the foods and flush through the drain. Call the professionals at O’Connor Plumbing for help with your disposal
  • Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaners?

Drain cleaners are very toxic. If you ever look on the back of the product you will notice at least 3 warning labels. These are not very good products to have laying around your house especially if you have kids or pets. These toxic chemicals are also very bad for your pipes, causing them to deteriorate from the inside out. If this happens your drain lines will need to be replaced. There are enzymes and friendly bacteria products that will keep grease and sludge from building up inside of your pipes.

If you have a clog please call the professionals at O’Connor Plumbing!

  • Why does the toilet keep running?
This is probably the most commonly asked plumbing question. In most cases it is caused by the flapper not closing on or making a proper seal around the flush valve. If the flapper is not closing, then jiggle the handle and that will normally fix the issue. If the flapper is worn out and not properly sealing, then you will have to have the flapper replaced. Either way if the flapper does not seal the water will leak into the toilet and the tank will not fill with water to push the float up and turn off the supply of water.
  • Do I need a tankless water heater?
Tankless water heaters, while at the front of technology, aren’t the solution for every house. Sometimes you are better off staying with your conventional heater. Here at O’Connor Plumbing we have tankless water heater experts that can provide you with a tankless or tank style heater that best suits your home.
